Invisalign® FAQs

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is the virtually invisible way to straighten teeth without braces. Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners to gradually straighten teeth, without metal or wires. Each aligner is individually manufactured with exact calculations to gradually shift your teeth into place. Also, since your Invisalign aligners are custom-made for your teeth and your teeth only, you know you'll end up with a smile that truly fits.

Who can use Invisalign?

Invisalign can be used to treat the vast majority of common orthodontic problems for adults and teens, from overly crowded teeth and underbites to jaw problems and tooth misalignment. Invisalign is also great for people who have had braces in the past to correct teeth that have shifted out of place. Not only is Invisalign versatile, helping to correct a broad range of dental and orthodontic issues, but it really works. There are over half a million smiles that prove Invisalign is the right choice for clear orthodontic treatment!

How does Invisalign work?

Dr. Glassman will work with you to create a custom-designed program that will treat your specific dental or orthodontic issues. Your Invisalign aligners will gently and gradually move your teeth through the appropriate placement of controlled force. Each aligner moves teeth little by little and is worn for about two weeks, then replaced by the next in the series until the final position is achieved. While using Invisalign, you will schedule regular appointments with Dr. Glassman, usually about once every four to six weeks, to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned.

How long will my Invisalign treatment take?

Your treatment plan will start with a consultation with Dr. Glassman to discuss your options and create a detailed treatment plan that determines how each of your aligners will change throughout your program. As you progress through the series of aligners, your teeth will begin moving into their desired location. Because every smile is different, your Invisalign treatment time will be determined by Dr. Glassman based on your specific needs. However, treatment generally lasts between 9 and 15 months, so you'll be able to show off your new, straight smile in no time!

How often do I have to wear my Invisalign aligners?

It is very important that you wear your Invisalign aligners all day as prescribed by Dr. Glassman, except when eating, brushing, and flossing. Invisalign can be removed for special events and occasions, but not wearing the aligners as directed will increase the length of treatment time, or allow for a relapse of previous orthodontic progress. On average, it is recommended that Invisalign aligners are worn for about 22 hours per day.

Is Invisalign comfortable?

With Invisalign, you don't need to worry about gum and mouth irritation because there are no metal brackets or wires to get in the way. No metal or wires also means you spend less time in the doctor's chair getting adjustments. While Invisalign moves your teeth without the pain and anxiety of metal braces, you may experience temporary pressure or discomfort for a few days at the beginning of each new stage of treatment. It's a sign that Invisalign is working as your teeth move to their final destination. This discomfort typically goes away in a few days.

What can I eat while in treatment?

You don't have to give up your favorite foods to get a great smile! Unlike traditional braces, you can eat whatever you want when using Invisalign because you remove your aligners to eat and drink. Chewing gum is discouraged as it will stick to the aligners and smoking is not recommended because the aligners may become discolored. Remember, it is important that you brush your teeth after each meal and prior to re-inserting your aligners to maintain good oral hygiene.

What are Invisalign aligners made of?

Invisalign aligners are made of clear, strong medical grade polyurethane resin that is virtually invisible when worn. They are an FDA approved medical device and do not contain any harmful or hazardous materials, such as Bisphenol-A (BPA) or phthalate plasticizers.

How much does Invisalign treatment cost?

Improving the look and function of your smile is an investment in your health, happiness, and self-esteem. There are many factors that will determine the cost of your Invisalign treatment, such as the extent of the issues you want corrected, the length of your treatment plan, and the specific details prescribed by Dr. Glassman. The cost of Invisalign treatment is usually comparable to the cost of traditional braces, but Dr. Glassman will be able to fully determine the cost based on your specific goals and needs.

What about insurance?

Many dental insurance plans cover Invisalign just as they would traditional braces. If your dental plan is one of them, Invisalign may qualify as an orthodontic treatment option. Be sure to check with your insurance provider to determine your coverage. Our office also offers flexible payment options through Chase Health Advance, CareCredit, and Springstone Patient Financing.
